This pop-up is up for only two weeks to celebrate the launch of the permanent jewel box salon at Bergdorf Goodman. On the seventh floor in the loft that typically hosts seasonal installations (I have many memories of long days and nights setting this space myself) was completely transformed into an incredible Parisian lifestyle salon.

By chance I was in town for the shop to be open and snapped a few images. This week I caught the email from Architectural Digest, who posted professionally shot images of the space. I can imagine that this room will blow up the Pinterest stratosphere. And although it truly is beautiful, and gasp... mostly white! It's quite classic and follows some pretty standard guidelines of interior design. I took note of a few special details and design ideas that are nothing new, but can be kept in mind when we're designing the next Parisian apartment of our own.

1. Add Layers of Texture to Create a Finished Feel

This space is mostly white with a few subtle accents of black, gold and blush. Seeing a connection to the brand? Chanel is always on brand and they never stray away from their iconic color palette when evoking the Chanel aesthetic. The clear Ives Klein table reveals a texture of gold, layered over a shag carpet that is set under sofas that are upholstered in a tweed woven material. On the consoles flanking the fireplace they've created layered vignettes through styling with flowers, boxes and jewelry. Without these extra layers and attention to texture, the space may feel unfinished, similar to an outfit without jewelry or accessories.

2. Tell A Cohesive Story Through Styling

Styling bookshelves in a tone on tone palette with subtle pops of a contrasting color will always look clean and chic. This can be accomplished by wrapping all of your books in white paper... That however is not realistic for the everyday, so take other styling cues like keeping with a theme of objects and colors to tie it all together. In this case, they have repeated the Chanel lions throughout, as well as the hands and busts, which are used to display jewelry here, but vintage hands or plaster busts can be a real life alternative. They've also repeated mirrored and glass objects to keep the styling cohesive and minimal.

3. Balance is Best

This vignette is almost symmetrical, aside from the settee to the left and the bar to the right. Perfect symmetry is boring and not exactly realistic. Plus, who wouldn't want to drink and lounge in their dressing room? The flowers are not exactly symmetrical as well. Through layering different heights, shapes and depth of colors the weight of the composition is visually balanced.

PS - Notice how they've layered the rugs here, that goes back to no. 1. Layering your rugs with different soft textures will make the space that much more opulent.

4. Mix + Match Furnishings

The key to creating a home that feels timeless, yet fresh and modern, is pairing new and old furnishings. The chairs in this image are a classical French Bergere silhouette paired with a modern Eames marble table. In the previous image, a neoclassical style vanity is paired with a modern Panton chair.

Last few points to note...

5. Walls are unnecessary to divide the space, you can create different rooms within one room through coupling furnishings into distinct moments and vignettes.

6. Light the space with decorative accent lighting from all corners of the room, rather than relying on the overhead light fixture.

7. A little bit of wallpaper will make a big statement. In this day and age with all the beautiful wallpaper options available, I think every home should have wallpaper in a least one room. Don't be afraid of a little style, it'll pay off.
